The Ngaju Dayak People live in Central Kalimantan, which is their homeland, but now they have also spread to other parts of Indonesia, not only Kalimantan but also other Island, such as Java and Sumatera. In Central Kalimantan they number about 62,000 people, whereas in East Kalimantan,South Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan they total 20,000 people, with another 10,000 people living outside his large island. If second language speakers of other Dayak ethnic group would be included, then Ngaju Dayak speakers would number about 800,000 people, since the language is also used a lingua franca among different ethnic group in the area.
The Ngaju language is still used by all layers of the community from small children to old people, and also used even in Jakarta when Ngaju people communicate with each other. In several schools, especially in school that train young people in the art of preaching in the Nganju language, lesson are given on knowledge of the language.A natural love for the language is still apparent among young people, even though they may have mastered the Indonesian language already.
The Indonesia Bible Society plans to publish the Illustrated Children’s Bible in the Ngaju language. It is hoped that this publication will foster love for their own language among Ngaju children and at the same time cultivate their fondness for Bible stories.
